Mohonk & Dia:beacon

Sadly we are unable to get away this winter so I’m left reminiscing about my favorite getaway - Mohonk, NY. It's only a couple of hours outside the city and is the perfect place to relax and recharge. We went twice last year, once in January and once in November. We are always searching for peace and quiet while working and living in the city and Mohonk has always provided us exactly that.

The first time we went to Mohonk I received the most relaxing facial and best skincare advice specific to my needs without having products pushed on me. Dom was in heaven once he saw the fire place in our room (they supply wood each morning, he built a fire every night). He loved the massages and the ice skating too! And then this past fall we were able to take advantage of the tennis courts just before they closed down for the season. There truly is something there for everyone and every season.

We tried to make the most of our road trip this last time up and decided to check out Dia:Beacon. Have you been? I didn’t even know about it until last year and when I realized it was on the way to Mohonk I decided we had to stop. I can definitely say it’s one of my favorite museums now. It’s in an old Nabisco box-printing factory with art spanning from the 60’s to the present. They have a permanent collection of Agnes Martin there, if you enjoyed the exhibit at the Guggenheim that just ended, it’s well worth a trip. Each room is designed specifically for the artwork it exhibits, everything down to the direction of light filtering in from the skylights.

After the museum we headed up to Hudson for lunch at Swoon Kitchenbar. Large salads, shoe string fries and glasses of crisp white wine hit the spot. We walked around for a bit, ducking into some antique shops and grabbed some coffee from Moto Coffee/Machine; they make motorcycles and coffee look good together. Just before the sun set we ended up at Talbot & Arding, a local cheese shop, for some treats to take back to our room. The lady behind the cheese counter let us taste anything and everything, it was hard to choose only one to take with us. We ended up with a creamy funky cheese that we spooned onto a baguette in front of our fireplace while we sipping Champagne. It was a pretty great weekend.
